ENCAUSTIC

Encaustic is a centuries old process of painting with oil paints mixed with melted beeswax and damar resin. In my opinion, encaustic is the perfect medium that encompasses all the atmospheric parts of the arts I love most. Gorgeous colors and textures, carving opportunities like ceramics, building up layers, and the forgiveness of being able to scrape back areas and start anew.

I chose encaustic for my Shellscape Series because its unpredictable outcomes of fusion and the various sheens produced lend itself to capturing the inexplicable glory of the magical art of Mother Nature. My hand is guiding the process and design but there is an uncontrollable aspect that kicks in as the work cools that leads to all sorts of magic. There is definitely a divine hand directing the final piece that I trust entirely. I am merely a conduit in bringing these creations to life.
